“Legends”. The Complete Carers Co Basketball Team.

One of the most fun and memorable experiences I have ever been a part of.
— Luke Greenwell

I can recall that very first basketball training session with our all abilities team.

There are members of our team with physical disabilities, autism, ADHD, intellectual disabilities, visual impairments…there are no barriers to be involved in our team.

No one knew each other at our first session. Very few had ever even bounced a basketball, so the finer points of zone defence and the techniques of a pick and pop would have to wait.

You could, though, tell it was the beginning of something very special… It was the beginning of the Complete Carers Co. Legends, a team name that could not be any more appropriate for our first basketball team for persons with disability.

Led by head coach Jamie, The Legends would train every Monday and play games on a Friday night. The positive impact this team was having on all the players was abundantly clear from the first tip-off.

Pretty soon, a team completely unfamiliar with each other even a week ago were were sharing jokes, and high fives. Friendships were being formed and a real team spirit being forged.

Each week the players would turn up and embrace the season’s grind.

The momentum started to build and the wins started to add up. In only their first year in the league The Legends made the Grand Final! How good is that…

The Legends made it because they were a team. They played for one another, shared the ball and genuinely loved turning up each week.  It was a true team effort. The sound of the siren going as the team cheered  knowing they had made the big dance was unforgettable.

Everyone should have the opportunity to be actively involved in whatever sport they choose. I’m happy that Complete Carers Co are passionate about offering sport to persons living with a disability in our local community, in a fun, safe and supported environment.
